Based in Washington, DC, the American Psychological Association (APA) is a scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in the United States. With 150,000 members, APA is the largest association of psychologists worldwide. Psychologists use their extensive education and training to examine human behavior with the goal of helping others through behavioral modification. An empirical discipline, psychology involves the study of people and their interactions with one another in order to understand better why people do what they do and perhaps to make predictions about future behavior. Unlike their psychiatrist counterparts, psychologists generally do not prescribe medication to treat psychological issues. Degree and Program Information for a Psychologist Career
A Master’s or Doctoral degree is required for any person who wants to become a psychologist. (Having your Bachelor’s degree is a prerequisite, but it doesn’t have to be in psychology.)
