Generally speaking, you need a bachelor’s degree in either industrial design or a related field, but if your school doesn’t offer a program catered directly toward industrial design, architecture and engineering degrees would certainly suffice.
Hands-on experience through internships and other learning experiences are always appreciated by employers, and a portfolio that shows the range of your experience is also highly regarded.
Most importantly, designers must have a great understanding for the technical elements of how a good product functions. This knowledge can be gained through a college curriculum, or through hands-on experience, where you will inevitably have the opportunity to add your best work to your portfolio.

In May 2008, commercial and industrial designers held roughly 44,300 jobs. The median annual wages for commercial and industrial designers were $57,350. The middle 50 percent earned between $41,550 and $76,700, while the lowest 10 percent earned less than $31,400, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $97,770.
Industrial Design Careers Job Outlook
According to the department of labor, employment opportunities for commercial and industrial designers are expected to grow 9 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is as fast as average for all occupations.
