Advertising Careers Information

Anyone can sit back and judge an ad but few people understand the extensive process behind advertising and promotions. Advertisers must determine how to attract consumers to products/services and to ultimately stimulate purchase of them.

Advertising Careers & Degrees

Several different advertising executives play integral roles in the production and execution of ads. For example, art directors and copywriters design advertising materials, account executives communicate with clients to determine their objectives and devise strategies, and media planners determine which media outlets the ads will appear in and also buy/sell media space. The industry is extremely fast-paced and advertising executives must be prepared to work under tight deadlines and deal with constant change.

Advertising Careers Path

Education requirements vary by position but employers typically prefer a bachelor’s degree in advertising, marketing, or business administration with a broad liberal arts background (coursework in English, psychology, journalism, etc.). Some creative positions only require an associate’s degree. Almost all employers prefer that entry-level applicants previously completed an internship.

Advertising Careers: Salary Expectations

The median annual salary for advertising executives is approximately $64,000. On average, entry-level advertising jobs start at $31,340. Those with 1-4 years of experience typically earn $41,739 and those with 5-9 years of experience earn $49,024 on average.

Advertising Careers: Job Outlook

Employment opportunities are expected to grow approximately 22% through 2014. This is largely due to the increased production of goods and services as well as the expansion of media outlets used to reach consumers. Job opportunities might be tempered by the potential passing of legislation that restricts advertising products like alcohol and tobacco. Also, layoffs occur frequently at ad agencies in response to losing major accounts, decreased budgets, and the merging of agencies.
