HVACR systems are comprised of a large number of electronic, mechanical and electrical mechanisms, and technicians must be familiar with how to work with all of these specialized parts. Frequently, HVACR technicians will concentrate on either installation or maintenance/repair, but have training in both areas. They must be able make diagnose necessary adjustments and perform them, as well as conduct tests on how well the equipment is performing.
HVACR Technician Careers Path
A six month to two year program in HVACR, leading to certification and/or an apprenticeship is the first place to start on the path to becoming an HVACR technician. Courses in chemistry, physics, math, electronics, and mechanical drawing are helpful. If dealing with refrigeration, special certification is needed to handle refrigerants.

Opportunities in the field are expected to increase by 18-26% by 2014. Older technicians will be retiring, and a rising number of construction projects will couple with increasingly complex HVACR systems to provide a need for more technicians. Also, a call for more energy-efficient systems will lead to many older systems being replaced with newer ones.
