The word chiropractor comes from the Greek words meaning hand and ‚¬Å“practical/to do. This name is apt since chiropractors are trained to use their hands to physically manipulate the musculoskeletal system in order to improve their patients’ overall health. Much chiropractic work is based on the belief that misalignments of this system of the body, especially the spine, can not only result in pain that affects quality of life, but also hamper the body’s ability to take care of itself.
Through gradual and well executed adjustments, a chiropractor attempts to reset these systems into proper alignment so the patient can lead a more comfortable and healthier life. They will often use x-rays and other scanning tools as well as physical, orthopedic, and neurological tests to gain a better understanding of their patient’s body.
A chiropractor also will often work with other physicians in order to keep with their goal of total and balanced health care. Through their non-invasive, drug-free techniques, chiropractors are quickly becoming more accepted in our society, which is increasingly seeking alternatives to drugs for easing pain and bodily discomfort.
Chiropractor Careers Path
Recently, a handful of schools became accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education to offer chiropractic programs which culminate in a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.). It is a four-year degree beyond a minimum entry requirement of 90 hours toward a Bachelor’s degree (roughly senior status) and involves both general classroom work and more hands-on training. All states require chiropractors to become licensed, which involves the requisite education and a passing grade on a state exam. Most states also require their chiropractors to earn a set number of continuing education credits each year to maintain their license.

Chiropractor Careers Salary Expectations
According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the average salary for chiropractors is $66,940 a year, with the middle fifty percent earning between $45,540 and $96,700. According to an industry publication, Chiropractor Economics, however, the average salary is $94,454 a year. Most chiropractors begin making less money and gradually earn more as they build their patient base. Geographic location and education level can also affect a chiropractor’s earnings.
Chiropractor Careers Job Outlook
The job outlook for a chiropractor is very good in the coming years as more people are exposed to and embrace alternative therapies. Historically, insurance companies have not covered chiropractic visits, which in turn limited the number of patients who could afford it. But as more insurance companies begin covering chiropractic care, the demand for chiropractic services should rise.
Those chiropractors with more education and who are willing to work in areas with a low concentration of established chiropractors should do well. Chiropractors who work with other medical professionals, such as a medical doctor and/or physical therapist, in a multi-use clinic should do the best as they can have patients referred to them by their business partners.
