Creativity and natural talent can go a long way in the art world, but is is important not to underestimate the value of an arts degree. A degree in the arts is an important thing to have if you want to be taken seriously and secure a job that you love.
An arts degree will give you training with at least one professional in your chosen field and all of the knowledge that comes with more traditional classes. And, by the time you complete your arts degree, you will have a portfolio of work that showcases your abilities and talents. Types of Arts Degree Programs Available
You can earn a number of different degrees in the arts – associate, bachelor’s, master’s – and many schools offer both campus and online options.
An associate arts degree takes the least amount of time to earn and will give you a general overview of the field, whereas bachelor’s and master’s options take a little longer but prepare you for a specific career in fine arts, animation, architecture, fashion, interior design, industrial design, creative writing, dance, television production, photography, video game design, visual communications or more.
Typically, you will have to choose between a general arts degree or a fine arts degree. Those with a fine arts degree find work as painters, sculptors, etc. – those fields we usually associate with “art.” These degrees usually require some time in a traditional classroom, where you will work hands-on with a mentor, but there are a handful of alternatives. A general arts degree can be applied to a number of other jobs, but still provide you with many different skills.
What an Arts Degree Teaches You
In the beginning, the focus of an arts degree is almost always on the fundamentals and history of art and communicating ideas in a visual way. Then, depending on which degree you pursue and what your concentration is, you might learn about design basics, gallery management, computer technology and animation, filmmaking, acting, musical theater, copyediting, pottery or any number of other skills.
